Smashbox is offering an absolutely fabulous idea: “Build Your Own Kit,” featuring your choice of award-winning products. Pick an eyeshadow trio, blush and lip enhancing gloss — any color from the full line — for just $39 ($84 value). Promo ends on Sunday, February 13 at midnight PST. I wish more companies gave us the chance to mix and match in value kits!

L’Oreal MagicSmooth Souffle Makeup

Flipping through a recent issue of People magazine, I discovered a free sample card of L’Oreal MagicSmooth Souffle Makeup and Magic Perfecting Base with $2 off coupon. Both contain a significant amount of silicone ingredients, which I’m sensitive to, but wanted to try it on, since many of you have no trouble with ‘cones.

Magic Base

I first applied the Magic Perfecting Base ($10.99), aka primer, a thick dry-feeling cream. It did instantly fill-in pores and gave a very smooth look to the skin. My oiliness broke through after a couple of hours, however it did keep my makeup on longer than without.

Classic Ivory (l), Nude Beige (c), Sun Beige (r)

Next, I put on a blend of the two darker shades of the MagicSmooth Souffle foundation ($14.99). The shades went on lighter than the swatch, so the darkest shade probably would have been good alone. The texture was very similar to the Magic Base. It gave medium coverage and did “blur” the skin a bit, as the ads promise (it’s not just shaky camera work!). MagicSmooth Souffle is available in 12 shades.

Maybelline FIT ME Foundation

Maybelline FIT ME foundation ($6.99) is on the other side of the texture/coverage fence compared to L’Oreal MagicSmooth. It promises “translucent, flawless skin that lets the real you come through.” I would describe it as a tinted moisturizer with a bit of coverage. It blends really well and the range of 18 shades covers a lot of skin tones. You can layer it for more coverage, but it’s never going to hide imperfections.

FIT ME in 220 Natural Beige

I tried a friend’s FIT ME in Natural Beige. Because it’s lightweight, it’s forgiving on the skin, but I would purchase the next darker shade. Like the L’Oreal, FIT ME also has a large amount of silicones. If you like a hint of coverage (the no makeup – makeup look) with sun protection, check it out. FIT ME provides SPF 18.

Both L’Oreal and Maybelline can be purchased at drugstores.

I didn’t fall-in-love with either foundation, I think there are better products. But, for an inexpensive choice, Maybelline FIT ME is worth a look.
